It is really good to see all the people who care about our environment, and want to cut down on mankind’s CO2 footprint, but I believe that many of them have been fed a bill of goods by academia, and global warming alarmists. You see, CO2 is a trace gas in our atmosphere, there isn’t really all that much of it compared to the other gases. Mankind’s CO2 output is only about 2.6% of all the CO2 in the atmosphere, the other 97+ percent comes from nature.

Nevertheless, we have so many passionate young college students who want to go out and fix the world. They think they can come up with an eco-innovation, start a new company, and get subsidized taxpayer funding and grants, and gifts from the government. Indeed they have hopes of making millions of dollars, but alas the free-market is a little less forgiving for the starry eyed wannabe entrepreneurs.

As the founder of a think tank online, and a retired franchisor founder, I am somewhat irked by this rush of brand-new college students getting out of school, and starting businesses without understanding the reality of return on investment in free markets. Today, they want to cash in on the subsidies, the grants, and the fact that government is increasing regulation on their competitors to give them a free ride.

That can’t last forever, and perhaps you’ve noticed that China has been cutting down on the number of REEs they are allowing to leave their country. REEs are Rare Earth Elements; and included in this list of elements is lithium which is used to make ion-lithium batteries, something that is used in hybrid automobiles, and other alternative energy high-tech devices.

Not long ago, I was talking to the business manager of just such a startup company, who proudly told me about his Harvard MBA, and his buddy who graduated from MIT with an engineering degree, and had been involved in driving a solar car across the Australian Outback. Hey, that’s all well and good, but let’s get real – in other words, let’s come back to the real world here for a second.

The device they’d come up with is a tethered kite-flown donut-shaped wind turbine generator. Its body would be lighter than air, although the entire device “might” be might still work if it were heavier than air, because it would use the wind which is blowing to keep it aloft. Still, it would probably have to be very light and as such have hydrogen or helium inside of it. Hydrogen doesn’t make sense, due to lightning storms, and there is a problem when it comes to helium.

The reality is there is a shortage of helium in the marketplace, and it makes it almost as big of a problem as the rare Earth elements issue. Therefore I asked them; “What are you doing about the challenges of the cost of helium? And if you use hydrogen, what about lightning?” They hadn’t considered this problem, and yet they were going to go ahead with their business plan, and had already collected a grant from the DOE for $300,000 of my taxpayer’s money.

Amazing I tell you, what are they are teaching these kids in college? And you thought tuition was a big onerous expensive no return on investment? Apparently, academia seems to not understand. It’s too bad they don’t teach financial literacy in our colleges in America. Quite frankly as an entrepreneur, a taxpayer, and an innovator myself who runs a think tank, I’m a little bit miffed with the whole thing. Please consider all this.

When it comes to eco-innovations in business you need a large mega-phone and you need to market and advertise or you’ll end up like 10s of thousands of eco-entrepreneurs gone bankrupt while trying to chase so-called easy money, grants, guaranteed loans, and catch the wave of eco-friendly trends. I think so, and I also believe that people can’t get enough, they always want more information, and they’re interested in novelty, new innovations in the space, creative ideas, and new strategies to keep the earth clean, run our transportation more efficiently, and harvest free energy from any source possible. Okay so let’s talk shall we?

Water Collection Hats Needed – A Crazy Eco Innovation Idea and Concept

The other day, I was sitting in Starbucks and I noticed someone with one of those cool hats, the kind that you’d expect a bookie to wear or a Cuban tycoon. I got to thinking that that hat might be problematic for someone who was out of the rain because it would collect water on the hat, and send it flowing down onto your back, or if you’re tilting your head forward, it would spill all over you. Nevertheless, a hat of that shape would be quite good for collecting water.

Since we do have a water crisis, why not use hats to collect water, freshwater for drinking later. In many parts of the world they have monsoons, and rainy seasons. The water floods and rushes to the ocean, and then in the summers it is quite dry with not enough water. It’s a Catch-22, people pray for rain during the summer, during the drought season, and then they get flooded out come the first monsoon.

Worse, the summer season is even tougher because the populations have increased and with increased populations there is greater water use for an already overtaxed supply. It wouldn’t be hard for everyone to collect the water as they go through their daily routines when it rains. And in many of these countries the water is polluted, and it has parasites and it. Rainwater is pure, and it is ready to drink. Would it be difficult to collect water using a hat? No not really.

In fact, if the hat had little tubes coming from it all the way down someone’s back and along the sides of their legs you could put Mini-Hydro-Wheels at or around the knees to generate small amounts of electricity. Remember electricity is also scarce in many countries, but the citizens could use that electricity to power up small tech devices such as iPads, or smart phones.

Why not utilize the Rainwater, and the hats that people are already wearing? Such a system wouldn’t cost that much, and once the water got down to the ankles it could flow into a little bottle, which might later be used to drink. Water pollution and water scarcity is a serious problem in our world, and many people are concerned with energy generation causing pollution. Maybe this simple solution might be great for people who live in remote regions of our world, and are very poor.

If you have a quite a few house plants in your home as I do, then perhaps you’ve heard the theory that you should turn your plants around occasionally and allow them to face the Sun or light coming into your home from a different angle. This theory bothers me because plants in their natural setting don’t have themselves repositioned in that way. Nevertheless, this theory, persists, one I completely disagree with, but others swear by. Now then, I have a very dear friend who often comes over and starts re-adjusting all the house plants, I wish she’d stop doing that, but she is one who believes it makes the plants work for a living, and keeps them strong by forcing them to re-adjust. Personally, I think this is just a really dirty trick on the planets, and I’d ask you how you’d like it if someone screwed with you like that as you just became perfectly acclimated to your environment?

Okay so, I have a better idea to help the plants out, a new invention if you will. Try to visualize a solar powered Lazy Susan Sun Tracker for potted house plants, where the plant sat on the swiveled base. Directly under the turn-style would be a battery, and the system would have a Sun positioning sensor, always facing the plan towards the Sun. Alongside the pot would be a solar panel, also always facing the sun and thus collecting energy.

The energy collected would move the swivel incrementally perhaps every hour or so as needed, just one turn of the geared wheel on the base. Obviously, that would not take much energy, but the additional energy could be used to charge cellphones, iPads, or other small personal tech devices with a very small inverter. This way everyone is happy now. Your plant, your iPad or smart phone, and you also, and finally, if anyone tries to turn your plants around, you can simply advise them that the system turns itself, so don’t touch anything.

It is my believe that this innovation and invention can be build for around $150 and they will sell to people who love their plants and want to live green. Please consider all this and think on it.
